AIAA Student Section,
Prescott Arizona
Tucson Trip 1999
We were invited by the AIAA Pheonix
Section to the Tucson Section revival, of sorts. Eight Embry-Riddle
Students and our advisor, Dr. Madler, drove down to Tucson for a weekend
of tours and socializing.

We began at the Pima Air &
Space Museum. This museum has over 200 aircraft, including several
rare and unique prototypes, research aircraft, and VIP transports.
This museum is home to a Challenger Learning Center, which caught our eye
as a possible future trip in itself.

Next, we visited the University of Arizona Steward
Observatory Mirror Lab. The mirror in the picture at right is
one of the two 8.4-meter mirrors that are to part of the Large Binocular
Telescope at Mt. Graham (near Safford, Arizona). The telescope mirrors
manufactured at this lab are unique in their honeycomb design and spin-casting
method.

Last, we traveled to Kitt
Peak National Observatory. Kitt Peak has the largest concentraion
of optical research telescopes in the world. We were fortunate to
tour the WIYN 3.5-meter telescope and the McMath-Pierce Telescope--the
world's largest solar telescope. |
Special Thanks to the AIAA
Pheonix Section for arranging this trip.
